I want to connect my Furuno GPS 31 (fixed GPS) to my laptop, Dell or Toshiba. What cable/connecter do I need. Maplin is over my head. I have connected this GPS to a wheel pilot and to radar but to a simple PC seems more complex than I imagined.

you will need a serial port connector, on my garmin they supply a connector for £18ish, but if you have a newish laptop you will need a usb to serial port crossover as well.
do a search on google see what comes up

You need a 9 pin serial connector
Pin 2 data in
Pin 3 data out
Pin 5 ground

I cut the tail off an old mouse and used it to connect to a Garmin 48.

Is the colour coding the same i.e. use the blue and white wires of the mouse cable?

Maplin is actually the easiest solution. Assuming that the GPS has a serial outlet, and that your computer only has a USB socket, you buy a converter cable and software from Maplin. It is very simple to install and run.

On the one I used

Pin 2 was brown, Pin 3 was white and Pin 5 black- You need to ring through to check on the lead you use.

Is it a round 4 pin connector?
There was a company in Scotland that used to sell these, Search the web for Garmin connectors?

The company in Scotland was Lynks cables. I have one of their cables connecting my Garmin 12 to yeoman. Good quality at reasonable price.
