My trusty Garmin Map76 seems to have died. Dead screen on battery or cable....

Only a back up now but it's quite possible to do basic navigation on these with only the base map. I do like it and it has 25 years worth of waypoints.....plus the dodgy track through the I'le de Batz.

Anyone had similar or can recommend someone who could look at it?

Suspect its not worth it so if there is a used unit out there for sale......will post of the Wanted site maybe....hate to lose an old friend.

.

What does that do that your phone can’t, as a backup device?
I've got one.. still working not for sale, as I occasionally use it down here or up in Scotland.

It works when there's no phone signal, inland or at sea..

Amazingly I've got a phone signal in this bit of Norfolk today, we often haven't.

But your phone GPS also works without any phone signal. Have used mine mid Atlantic.
And can download charts or maps as needed. I have the entire UKHO set of UK & Ireland charts permanently on the phone (£25) as well as OS 1:25,000 for walking (another £25, though the latter needs the relevant area downloaded pre walk).

Probably MemoryMapForAll with UKHO charts.

That's what I've got for £25 per year.

I think you can get them for £25 one off with no updates.

But I'm sure @dunedin will be along soon to confirm.
Yes I use Memory Map store, as many/most Scots do as we also use MemoryMap for Antares Charts.
Have some old versions which were perpetual, but hardly a concern paying £25 a year for the latest versions.

Worth taking a look inside to check the internal battery. If expired then there are companies out there who will supply or fit a new one. Worked for my ancient and beloved GPS 12. Good luck.

Update. Decided I have to admit defeat, just bought a secondhand Map60csx for seventy quid, it will use my existing power cables etc so is a good swap and will be a useful update

Run on AA batteries for a start. We also have a spare one that logs any time the instruments are on so we have a track going back to about 2012, but the daily track means we’ve no need to keep a separate log. We have marine charts and land maps on SD cards so also use it for hiking. The current generation has satellite comms and SOS function.
They also have a belt clip and carabiner to keep them safe while on deck.

I have 2 Garmin 76's

Sadly, both with ever increasing dimness. Old friends now.

I don't use a chartplotter. They were the first handheld that had some sort of elementary sea mapping.

The thought of manually creating something like 100 waypoints in a new handheld makes me plod along regardless.😀

Have you tried googling "Garmin Map76 will not power on". Gives you several options to try

What happens if you plug it into your PC.. ie. is the unit dead or just the screen... just wondering if you can export your waypoints just so you don't lose them...

I do recall transferring waypoints donkey's years ago but it's old tech so no chance now with USB ports......AI tells me I would need an interface card or serial converter. Don't think I will bother at this stage, I am over the initial shock of grief and disbelief. 😳

Still can’t see the benefit over a modern phone. Battery life lasts a day and easily recharged via any USB source (and carry battery booster when might be needed).
As noted earlier, got all charts and detailed OS maps for a wide area downloaded on the phone, so also used on water and ashore.
Can keep a record of track using multiple apps, including Memory Map.
Also acts as camera to take photos and messaging as needed.
