Have you tried the XP driver (or any of the others come to that)?? If you have and it still doesn't work, then if it was me I'd start thinking of regressing to XP on the laptop unless the Fortuna guys have some kind of forum/help page you can ask on..

It can probably be made to work. More info is needed:

How is the GPS connected to the PC?
What sort of cable do you have?
Is it a serial cable or a USB?
What is the program you are connecting to and what are it's input options?
Has it ever worked on previous laptops? If so how was it connected?

Usually these connections are SERIAL connections and there are all sorts of options. THIS thread should probably be in the lounge.....

I have a Fortuna U2 in my backup box. ( I use it for Memory Map/C-Map planner)
Fortuna have not updated their U2 driver in ages, and the site does not support downloads anymore, unless its changed recently.

The Fortuna (if its a U2) is pre SIRF III and is not as good at picking up or retaining signals, and its much slower to lock on.

Suggest a Globalsat BU353 for under 20 quid off ebay.

Thanks guys, Fullcircle is spot on, I'd buy another, but I need it for driving in France from 26th Dec, I doubt I'd get a delivery before Xmas.

The Fortuna site is not working. The GPS receiver used to work with XP on another laptop, but I cannot get it to install on W7.

Elton, thanks, I'll give that a try tonight.

If all else fails SWMBO will have to work with a map.:(

Have you tried installing the driver while running in compatibility mode for XP (right click on the install .exe file and choose the compatibility tab)?

Not sure if this would work as drivers install in several different ways but might be worth a quick try.

Installing in compatibility mode should work for anything which worked in XP, and is quick to try so I'd second that.

Failing that if you have an appropriate version of Windows 7 (i.e. not the basic one) you can download free from Microsoft a copy of XP that runs under Win7 - bit longer winded but guaranteed to work...

Windows Virtual PC is sadly not guaranteed to work for general USB devices as the support for USB is limited to mass storage devices AFAIK. At least one XP based USB device I tried to install under WVPC was not recognised at all :(

Hth,

Thank you all, GPS now working, I think maybe Eltons driver suggestion solved that problem but I still could not get it working, but a few moments poking around and another forumite had it fixed, its so easy when you know how!

He knows who he is, so many thanks!

Fortuna GPS U2 on WIndows 7

Hi

I have a similar problem. Just upgraded a slow vista laptop to a fast windows 7 one, and cannot get the GPS to work. Have installed the Prolific drivers and all seems A-OK, but cannot get the Memory Map software to work with it - would you mid explaining what you did?

Thanks
