I should also have added that I have obtained a few ferrite thingies and tried these on a variety of different places before removing the old set but they didn't help. I suspect that the old set was really bad, probably too much to be cured by the ferrites. The strange thing was the set was very effective on both transmit and receive over lond distances, maybe VHFs have improved over the years.
