GPS Garmin not turning on

It was carefully stored, it never got wet new batteries, but it doesn't turn on.
Any idea?

our technical service does not offer repair for that model since it is discontinued

Its charts are prably way out of date and not renewable.

Garmin not noticeably helpful. However clearly its a power issue. First check batteries ok and connector not corroded. Then measure actual voltage at connectors - should be same as at battery but ..... If that ok open up unit and see voltage at switch, you might cause damage but you have nothing to lose.

If good voltage both sides of switch check that all push connectors clean and fully inserted.

If thats good but it still doesnt work you would need several hours at £90 an hour to investigate - so cut your losses and put whole lot in the recycling

My standard horizon radio was discontinued. They said send it back and would charge 80 to fix it . It came back 5 days later no charge. Free!!!. Not a good move financially but goodwill is worth a fair bit.

I’ve always found Garmin very helpful. Much more so than other marine electronic companies. But 20 years is ancient history for a bit of microcircuitry in a salt water environment. If they were a bit short, maybe it was less unpleasant than being laughed at.

All well and good and only new marinas missing from old charts

Not much use if device needs ££££ to repair

Your going to tell me you are writing this on an old Nokia which is 20 years old and still going strong so why update it 'cos Nokia are an excellent company that will keep their phones going forever?

No - I wrote it on a 2yr old Lenovo actually.

However, I have the 12v + data cables for it so tried it using the car socket. It started no problem and took about 10 minutes to get a position. Date and time were correct as well despite GPS roll over. I bought it in 2005 so 19 years old.

Power or not is the first go to, many a electrician has made an easy £60 checking and replacing the fuse

I've got the later model, the 78S and download Open Sea Map areas free of charge and convert them to Garmin format (again free) using BBBike so later charts are definitely available. And free too.
