Following my questions regarding monitoring my speed, there have been several suggestions that a GPS unit would be a good option. If I went down this route, what other features might I want to look for, bearing in mind that most of my boating is currently in-land riverbound on the broads.

Love a good gadget.
Thanks.

Sounds like one displaying OS co-ordinates (rather than lat and long) might sometimes be useful. Most sets provide this as an option.

To be seriously flash, you could go upmarket with a chart-plotter to display your precise position on a map. If you mark in the position of all the speed traps you should have no excuse!

I`ve got a rather basic Garmin GPS12 and its brilliant. (and waterproof).

It`s a hand held about the size of an older mobile phone - so an old mobile phone holder is ideal btw. so I also use it in the car and put in waypoints so I don`t miss exits on the motorway etc. Now when I want to find a shop, house, job etc I just put the post code in multimap, type the grid ref into my GPS and then use goto - the arrow simply keeps pointing to where I need to get to and tells me how far away it is.

It can even be linked to a laptop and using a package like autoroute display where you are on a live map in real time. (so I`m told). Very Bond.

I got it for use on my boat - but it`s so usefull ashore too.
