Last August I damaged the screen of my hand held Magellen Nav6000. I was put in touch by M/g with a local sport shop for repair. I insisted they kept the batteries and chart card in, so as not to loose my waypoints taken from allover the world. They relieved me of £6.50 postage and duly sent it off to France for repair. This was the last that was known of the unit, and after several letters & phone calls the local company will not give me any explanation as to whereabouts of my unit. Am I in my right to replace the unit and claim back my loss? I have threatened along these lines. The unit has been hard wired in on the boat mainly as a back up. Dave.

You did get a reciept for it didnt you?
Get in touch with Magellan and explain your plight...you never know they may send you a new one.....
Failing that Trading Standards should be able to help as long as you have supporting paperwork evidence that they took the unit in for repair.

One thing you might come up against is the six month rule, if it still exists.
A repairer is allowed to sell a unit to regain the costs of service if uncollected within six months of the repair completion.
It is possible after such an elapsed time that to wriggle out of the consequences, they could claim that the unit was in fact there all the time and uncollected.
Just a thought...

It probably got lost in France anyway or never sent in the first place...or nicked by a staff member.
You should ask for the repairer to contact the company in France by telephone in your presence...this should shake them down a bit and give you an angle on what actually has happened.

At the end of the day your contract is with the repairer and it is up to them to provide restitution to your satisfaction.
It's obviously not worth legal proceedings, but threaten them with trading standards who will take your case up...and they're free.

Steve.

I think they must read the forum cuz today France has found the unit. They recon the unit is not repairable. They can transfer the data onto a disk send the old one back or let me have a new one for 400 euros. The 6000 cost about £400 5years ago and is no longer sold. Ive said if I can get it for £200. I will be intrested. All that was wrong with the old unit was a score to the l.e.d screen.
