What's it like ? planning a visit this weekend.

Clubhouse/bar/restaurant ?

Much in and around the marina ( very local, not ships, subs etc) for ankle biters ?

Any bertholders hereabouts ?

thanks.....

It gets our vote, however when we visited in the summer it was still being developed. It was clean, good value, nice atmosphere but a little rough (as in movement) at times.

We're looking to go somewhere for the weekend and may consider Gosport so look out for Northern Wave (Birchwood)

Went down to Gosport last weekend to sort out a berth (for my first boat). Spoke to the berthing manager (Hugh) who turned out to be very helpful. We spent a couple hours chatting through various issues and walking the pontoons. I eventually settled on a 12.5m berth on H (the berth is bigger than my intented boat but it should make berthing easier during my first year whilst I gain experience).

H pontoon is fairly wide and made from concrete. Other pontoons are wooden and on the day I went (wet day) I thought the wooden pontoons were slippery (might just be crap build up over winter). H also has 32amp electricity rather than 16 on the others. Electricity is all inclusive in the cost of the berth so you can use as little or as much as you want.

I got the impression they only have a choice of 10.5 or 12.5 m berths (and there weren't that many free).

It did seem a bit choppy due to the ferries passing close by. Ask me again in a year's time whether this is an issue or not !!! On the plus side it's fairly close to open waters so you're not spending ages in a restricted speed channel. It's dredged to 2M below chart, so access is at all tides. Fuel berth (diesel - didn't ask about petrol) is available.

Most facilities are still in porta-cabins. I believe a new clubhouse incorporating bar/restuarant is due to be built this year. Despite the temporary nature, all the facilities were clean and tidy. I didn't notice much else on site, but spotted a couple pubs on the drive down.

There is a separate boatyard on site with lifting facilities (haven't spoken with them yet so don't have details on prices). The marina staff don't have any issues with bringing outside contractors onto your boat provided they have insurance. Didn't notice any chandlers, but didn't really look for them either.

Hope this helps.

Not much for kids around the marina, I'm afraid. As other have said, cross over to Gunwharf. If things get desparate, walk from there along the new path round the headland to Southsea (?30-ish mins) for gloriously tacky amusements, botulo-burgers, crazy golf etc. and the Sea Life centre, D- Day museum and Pyramids Swimming Pool.
