Some years ago a smallish open speedboat arrived in Yarmouth, tied up and the four occupants disappeared into town. Some hours later they reappeared, with two men having to carry a semi conscious woman, all obviously obliterated by alcohol. They proceeded to literally fall into the boat, then the “skipper” fell in to the water. His compatriots dragged him back in and he started the engine to go back to Portsmouth (evidently). Several of us boat owners were begging them to stay, and someone called the harbour master. He too was unsuccessful in preventing them from leaving. No idea of the outcome, but have to presume they somehow made it.

Drink does seem to affect some people's judgement very badly, or perhaps it wasn't great in the first place... There was a case in Bath a while back where a stag party had hired a narrow boat. They entered a lock and pushed right up to the uphill gate, so close that the incoming water filled the boat via the bow door. The boat sank, and the group abandoned it and went off on foot into Bath to continue their night out.
The lock was blocked for weeks, in high summer, pending arrival of a huge crane to hoist the sunken boat out. I believe the financial consequences for the guys involved were pretty harsh; plenty of boaters in the area would have happily keel-hauled them.

It didnt happen in gosport. it hit a wall in cowes, search was launched but couldnt find them then the boat turned up in gosport.

Good spot.

The article was wrong and has been corrected, there was only one crash:

Correction 25 April: This article was amended after a previous version wrongly stated the crash happened in Gosport Marina, as first reported by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary. It has since been confirmed by police and Cowes Harbour Master that this detail was incorrect and although the boat was found in Gosport Marina, the crash happened off Cowes.

That makes much more sense.

Or because its what happened? I wonder if anyone could ask the marina staff.......and if they would respond??
I think you thought my first comment was a dig at the BBC, it wasn't. This is how journalism works in the UK these days, unfortunately. No budget to ask anyone anything, they've moved on to the next story and the next opportunity for "engagement" from viewers and readers. The higher the number the better and they don't mind how they get those numbers. Not limited to BBC, it's the whole industry

Must have been a happy boat travelling back from Cowes in the dark at speed with 3 injured people who needed to goto hospital once they arrived in Gosport.

I don't do conspiracy but something doesn't jive right here.....

Why is every site reporting that 3 people were taken to hospital after the boat crashed again in Gosprt Maina after 2300?
Its an incredibly minor, local news item. You don’t really think that a single one of those sites will have done any journalism at all, or fact checking, by picking up a phone or going down there do you? They just grabbed the first thing they found and published it as “content”

And it will only get worse, as fairly soon all this “content” will be harvested, rehashed and republished by AI bots. Our news will be automated.

True but theres all sorts of explanations. The most likely being they took themselves to hospital on arrival to patch up the injuries they got when knocked about. Once the initial adrenalin wears off and it starts to actually really hurt, they were already on their way. And probably not too keen on going back after that debacle :)
Hospital staff told police hence the “finding” of the boat.
All pretty mundane but sexed up to make suitable news content.

Of course it could have been a dramatic hispeed heist also, or just three pissed up eejits, both of which would be far more newsworthy.

Who knows, and unless some dramatic developments appear, the news sites will never tell us cos its done and dusted, and not current content anymore.

The BBC reported what the Police originally said then the Police changed to story.
So a bit unfair to blame the reporters for printing the original story.
