Good places to eat near BYH

Not at all impressed with the ferry boat inn, went there during Burnham week they lost our order so had to wait over an hour for any service at all, had to ask for the lights to be turned on so we could see what we were eating and it wasn't worth the wait when the food eventually arrived. Plough and sail at pagelsham is excellent good food and portions and a nice atmosphere.
 
I agree... Wnet to the Ferry Boat a few weeks back with the Roach Sailing Association, and the meal was distinctly forgettable. The landlaord is a miserable git who couldn't give a stuff about service, and it doesn't appear to have changed a jot over the last couple of years...

Apart from that it's fine!
 
More agreement. I was in company with Goldfish for the meal during Burnham Week. We were a reasonably large group and bought several rounds of drinks before the meal so were not an inconsiderable spend. My meal was borderline inedible and - as for freshness - I can see why they didn't want to turn the lights on. I've eaten better meals in motorway service stations!

Earlier this year ate in pub in the High Street. Think it was imaginatively called 'Ship Inn'. Decent pub grub at reasonable prices.
 
surprised to read your comments on Ferry boat either i have been very lucky or perhaps something to do with always going in before the start of service 6 ish havent been in for about a month will report back next time i try it
 
I have been to one of the pubs which back onto the riverside walk, I can't remember what it was called (They have a rectangular beer garden which backs onto the walkway). Beer was cold, but the food wasn't good. Typical straight from the freezer into the deep fryer stuff. 50% grease, 50% food.

We went into a smaller pub on the river walk but further along towards BYH. We didn't try the food, but the Crouch Vale Ale was very tasty!

Surprised at your opinion of Sgt Pepper's.
I had a mediocre meal there some years ago and not been back 'til this Burnham Week. Had a very good steak, cooked to perfection and good service.
Perhaps I was lucky.
In my youth the Oyster Smack used to be the pub you went to when barred from all others.
Tried to go for a meal there recently but was told we needed to book.
Times have changed!

I wonder if we are confusing two places, given the very different experiences described so far. Could it be that you went to the Creeksea Ferry Boat Inn, on the south side of the river?

The experience you describe would be just what I would expect there.
 
Goldfish, FullCircle, Dougie ThreeBottles, SweetPea, eastcoastbernie, Sirenia all at the Ferry Boat in Fambridge. Poor. Which is the second time this season. So no mistake.

I had the ribs, which are defrosted, heated through, some pre manufactured 'BBQ' sauce thrown over it, they are mushy and also served with slabs of poor quality, sand coated chicken breast, dry as a bone.

I agree, I have had steak there and enjoyed it, I just wish they would put some effort into cooking their own ribs and paying another 20p a pound for some decent corn fed chicken.

great going up the Ore, but I will let Tidemaster Morgana spill the entrance beans and subsequent events. I took the photos, which I hope will be on here.


Picked up a Visitors mooring (8 quid) and went ashore to the Jolly Sailor where we consumed more Adnams. Very good.
Their Menu looked good and prices reasonable, but it was very quiet in there for a Saturday night.
