good little reconstruction project on ebay

That's the problem with projects.
for only a few quid more than this you can easily buy someones finished project.

ie. an old boat fully equipped and in immaculate condition, is worth/can be bought for very little more money than a basket case like this one. a good Hunter 701 would be what? £3000 at most

Looks like it was bought for £600 or less see here but i see asking prices up to around £5500. If the description was accurate not too much of a basket case.

Want a real project? How about this:

Their is a boat yard at Woodbridge with a few more like that . SWMBO refuses to go there anymore says its to sad .. Lots of sad sailing boats and lots of sad people trying to put them back together again .. Does a boat EVER die or does it just keep getting past down the line with more and more people spending more and more time on the project .. Do these project people ever go sailing .. We do but then we were lucky to be able to buy a new project .. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Generally I would agree with you, always buy the best you can possibly afford, but perhaps that is old man's advice. A keen youngster could be on the water for less than £1000 with this one and make a small profit later.

My two boats were projects. The first time it took me three and a half years to do what I now would do in one .It was a steep learning curve. My present boat was in a sorry state but funcional.I had to do her up and this time it only took six months .Needless to say,I'll never do it again but I now have a strong functional yacht that'll take me anywhere.Sometimes a project is a good idea but sadly, most of the times it's not as people don't really understand the amount of work needed for this kind of thing.

I agree with you. 4 years ago I bought an oldish Fulmar to do up . I judged it safe enough to sail back from Holland across the North sea so it clearly wasn't a project in these terms , but it still cost me 65% of the cost of the baot to do up in the first year.

My point is that there is a point at which a boat is not economical to do up. Interestingly especially anything with FIN KEEL after all where are you going to keep it. Not much point in my view if you are paying , say, 50% of the cost of the boat in mooring fees at amarina every year 1
