Hello. I've recently purchased GH 31 number 176. There are a few issues needing looking at, but one I'd like some information on if possible is to do with the rudder and where it attaches to the skeg at the bottom. She's in the water at the moment so I can't take a look but there's clearly 'play' in the joint. Can anyone advise what the design is? Is it simply another pintle going into some sort of plastic/metal bush set within the skeg? I've no clue so any help would be very much appreciated so I can prepare for when I get her craned out. Many thanks. Lewis.

I own 203 which I bought just over a year ago and is undergoing a major refit

You can probably just make out the lower pintle goes into a hole in a stainless steel plate which is screwed onto the skeg with either self tappers or machine screws. Not entirely sure which as we did not remove it when we rebuilt the rudder. There was some play in it and the hole had some very small stones inside which we cleared out - in fact it would not come out at first because a stone jammed. I do not think there is a bush of any kind in there and once the hole had been cleaned out, the mating surfaces cleaned and the rudder reattached the play that was there originally had gone. The hole in the plate was not worn so not sure why there was any play beforehand. Be aware though that yours might not be exactly the same as Terry had a habit of changing things as he went along!

You will see that the rudder is not the normal shape as it has been modified to have a balance area forward of about 15% of the total area in an effort to lighten the helm and improve steering in reverse. Have only had the boat out once and only to test the new engine but I believe it has worked as it steered in reverse and was very light. The shape is based on the rudder that Mark Urry designed for the last 4 or 5 boats he built but the cutout is a bit different to accommodate the feathering propeller.

I have a lot of experience with these boats as I owned the original Eventide 26 that Hartwells built and from which the Golden Hind was developed. I also knew Terry Erskine at the time and sailed with Mark Urry who eventually took over the moulds. He built 3 GHs for his own use, the first in the 70s from a part complete wooden hull from Terry and later 2 of the 6 from his final modified mould.

I have posted quite a bit on the PBO forum of the work I have done in the refit and happy to share any information with you.

This is excellent, Tranona, thank you very much indeed. I'll do a little looking about the PBO forum for your other posts to get a few ideas as there's definitely a lot to do on my GH in the coming months. She's not been used for 5-6 years so quite neglected. Thank you too, Wansworth, very much appreciated. Lewis

Hi Lewis

Do you have a link to details of the boat you have? This is the broker details of my boat boatshed.com/golden_hind_31-boat-303654.html Where are you located? I am in Poole

Of course much has changed now. A few more photos of new bits which can be compared with the photos in the details. Still work in progress with lots of tidying up before the season starts.

She's lovely, Stewart, and in way better shape than mine. Mine had a lot of condensation over the years so the interior's in need of a good lick of paint/varnish. She wasn't with a broker so there are no links to photos, I'm afraid. I just tried to put one pic up here but for some reason it wouldn't work. I'll see if I can fix it.

I bought her in Fareham but she's now in Cardiff marina. I'll have a good bit of time in Spring so (with some good weather) I hope to make her a lot nicer. I'll keep in touch and show you her progress - and, no doubt, ask a few more questions!

Thanks again,

Lewis

Think I know the boat, one that I saw briefly on Apolloduck middle of last year sitting on a swinging mooring. maybe. funny mine moved from Wales and yours went the other way!

MIne is as dry as a bone now. Have just be down to do a bit of fiddling and it was 46F onside with a 150w tube heater on and a dehumidifier running 8 hours a day every other day.

A dehumidifier - my number one purchase for next winter. I've never seen so much water on a ceiling when she's left for a few days! Yes, I think you have the right boat. She was actually on a small pontoon berth but she was on Apolloduck for a while at the end of the summer. I'd had a lovely old Seadog 30 before but wanted to go back to tiller steering, have a bit more cabin space and go back to sloop rig so the GH fitted the bill. I'm looking forward to getting her out sailing later this year - once the jobs are done!

P.S. I had a look through your previous posts - what an excellent job you've done on Audeer. She really does look fabulous - and lots of information too. Plenty to keep me going!

Bit OT, but just in case anybody is looking for a GH 31, this one has been for sale at Titchmarsh Marina (Essex) for quite some time. No connection with the boat, but thought it may be of interest.

I considered that when I was buying mine but that is a good example of "improvements" doing the opposite - in my opinion of course! It will likely be the wood hull that is putting people off because there are a lot of unknowns. It was originally on for £20k which was OTT. I nearly bought a much better original (unimproved) wooden one for little more than the asking price of that, but pulled out because of the discovery of "unknowns" in the survey.

I saw this one too but thought exactly the same re-wood hull. I'm sure looked after they're good, but you never know,

Or that appealing monstrosity of a stern arch...
Mine had somewhat similar but a pair of davits with a solar panel on top

Now removed along with the Rutland which I sold to a forum member. Still have the davits which are really well made and would be good on the right sort of boat.

Yes. It was still working perfectly so I kept it to drive a NASA Easylog. sort of given up on through the water speed as the one on my last boat was unreliable and I never really missed when it gave up the ghost. I also have a Garmin 48 back up, dating from the mid 90s. Remember leaving it outside on top of the dustbin for the 2000 rollover.
