Go Big or Go Home?

Has anyone mentioned how hot it gets living on a boat in summer in Spain or anywhere hot. I spent a summer in Antigua on a 32ft yacht, boy was that hot
Bigger boats should have perfectly adequate air conditioning.
Its normally runs on the on board geny .
when it’s really hot we run the geny and Airco about hour before entering port the destination, so when we arrive the cabins / saloon is cool as cucumber to take shelter and rest your skin .
Talking air temps 30-40 degree range out at see and sea temps high twenties .

I have only ever found the summer heat oppressive in port. Anchor a few meters out to sea and you will get a cool breeze

I was on the boat for a couple of weeks at the beginning of September this year.
Half way through, the boat's Aircon Pump failed so I had no Aircon for the rest of my stay.
It was very hot - in Sant Carles marina - the only relief was to jump into the swimming pool.
I have fans over the bed so those were running at night and the side windows were open.

So, I can't believe what it would be like without Aircon in the middle of the summer - last year, the temps were in the region of 45 degrees C.

I imagine you took solace in the odd air conditioned bar ;)

Princess 50 mark 3 (c2008-2012). You won't find a bigger 50 foot boat. Fits in a 16m berth unlike the V52 et al.

Direct shafts, no V drives, solid glass under the water, large full beam master cabin, med spec aircon (a must), washer/dryer, watermaker, fantastic sea boat, fantastic live aboard, room for kids/ friends.

Cheers,

James.

Princess Mk3 is probably my favorite 50ft boat of the era... Just a bit pricey for me in the next year. In 3 years it's a different story, I just don't want to wait that long.

It’s all pointing towards a S58 !!Has pretty much all of the above. Personally it is about what you can live without as in a perfect world all would be nice. The grill on the Fly is a waste and a humongous pain to clean - get a Webber BBQ and barbie off passarelle, breakfast, lunch dinner. Storage is key. Med means aircon so get one big enough. You may tough it out but assume you want Mrs G there. Here is one thing i would change if i could - storage for plates and cutlery on the flybridge. You spend hours lugging that up and down and there is a sink on the fly which is where we (the kids) wash up. Inverter nice to have but not critical in my view. You need 100m of chain and a good anchor. Don’t compromise on that. Let us know what you end up with. Apart from teak, on a S58 of age you are looking at you will likely need to replace or fix the interior coverings especially in the bedrooms but most likely everywhere. I am sure the 55 would be the same. plus if engine hours at circa 800 you are approaching the need to service the whatever it is at top of engine that requires the floor to be taken out in the salon which is a real pain.

Oh yes.
One other thing.
The vintage of boat that you are looking at will probably have vacuum toilets.
These vac toilets are 'the work of the devil".
Most of us who have had them have replaced them with electric ones.
The makes of electric toilets that we like are either Planus or Tecma.
We bought our boat from new.
I managed to keep the factory fitted vac toilets working for about 9 years but they were always playing up.
Not fun.
Since replacing with Planus, all my toilet problems have gone away.
If you find a boat with vac toilets, I suggest that you reserve a budget to replace them.

Yes, Porto touched on this - one to definitely bear in mind. i believe changing a pair of them is around £3,000???

Yesm Scala - I've eyed it up (from the corner of my eye)... Lovely boat. I'm desperately trying to keep my budget at £225,000 which will leave me around £50,000 for a fighting fund. Trouble is, in 2 more years I could spend more but can't right now.

I'll take your Princess and raise you:-
