It apppears that the Ericsson dual R290 Satellite and GSM phone ( also has data capability and short emailmessage capability for free) is perhaps being discontinued)

The unit works on the Globalstar system and has plans for $40 and $60 a month with up to 150minutes a month.

ebay ($200) search ericsson r290.

Received mine in 4 days!, with no taxes!

It's always wise to look into the background before you launch in. What are the operating costs?, as that phone roams through local suppliers before trying to contact a satellite.

The satellite system seems a bit dubious, see here

Maybe OK in Canada, US and Caribbean, but not a great deal of use elsewhere, tho Asia does seem to be well catered for, from other websites.

The global sim card looks amazing - 12.5p a minute maximum charge anywhere, and PAYG with no charge for incoming calls in most countries. No data transfer function though, so no good for e-mail.

Has anyone used one of these and does it do what it says on the tin?

I use the Qualcomm GSP1600 as it has data capability (around $400 on eBay). Found it very useful. Big problem with the Ericcson 290 is the lack of this feature, as pointed out above.

From reading the website that is the cost to call the sim from a UK landline, regardless of where the phone is in the world.

Calls from the sim are variable, eg 44p per minute from Spain to UK

Still looks quite cheap though. Went to Russia las year, made a 3 minute mobile call to say I'd arrived - £35. Would've been £1.25.
