Glaze busting - what's the wisdom?

If you have a ridge, then conventional wisdom says, 'Rebore or resleeve'. In my distant past , I did several 'rough' rebuilds, deglazed with a 'small cylinder hone' (actually designed for brake cylinders, with only two stones) And always fitted STEPPED top rings, mostly from AE. As they were much less than the manfacturers brands. 'Perfect circle' in the USA seem to be a current equivalent. The explanation about wear on the top rings matching the bore is logical. Leading to new rings being stopped short on the old ridge. Certainly it was current then. Depending on the thickness of the liner (cylinder) sleeving might be an answer. But I doubt that it is cost effective compared with a new one.
If you can get stepped top rings, use them. Eliminates one possible problem.
Sealing in the bores is more inportant on diesels than petrol donks, so getting it right is prima.
Replacing the engine (price) might focus on getting this right.

What a lot of information! Many thanks. I've ordered new liner, mostly because of pressure of time and cash already invested. £189 +VAT.

The various forums show conflicting experience about how easy it is to extract the old one. Yanmar manual shows design for puller, but many people seem to think it will just tap out from 'below' (i.e. the side on this engine).

The rest of dismantling has been straightforward so I'm hoping it won't be rusted in. I will report back .

did you order the "O" ring for the lower seal

top ring hitting the lip

Well I for one can say with personal experiance, (was 13 at the time)new rings on a old bore = ring failure.

Not just at high speeds, Broke top ring on a stuart turner single cyl within 2 running hours. (max speed 1500 rpm).

Hard lesson rowing back from cookham to borne end.
