Re: Irritating? Yes indeed.

I simply want to post helpful safety advice. I dont have to prove who i am to anybody. I have been a member of a lifeboat station for many years now, some members on here know who i am & some dont. I pick who i want to tell.

The point here is not about or you, its about staying safe, thats all. There is certainly none of this ...."self righteous southern preacher man in my view and not worthy of any consideration at all."

Take notice or not, i only posted helpful advice.

We live in a country that is downing in safety advice, therefore I have to be selective about what information I take note of.

Your advice would have more impact if you made a clear declaration about your RNLI credentials.

YES! some people do need to be told

The implication is that leisure boat users run out of fuel because previously no one had warned them "do not run out of fuel". The RNLI has not been granted a statutory monopoly on maritime common sense.

If by contrast your post had said that of the 1400 RNLI cases involving out of fuel rescues, 20% were caused by blocked filters and 10% by faulty fuel gauges, then this would have been useful information that we could act on.

Useful advice? Useful to whom? What qualifies you to dish out advice to the rest of us? Identify yourself and your relationship to the RNLI or keep quiet. You are seriously close to being accused of being a troll.

Go away.

Re: Irritating? Yes indeed.

In my line of work almost every year we tow some clown in who has no idea what they are doinG out there.

eg two teenage lads drifting down channel on an ebb tide at dusk with a dead outboard no means of raising the alarm no oars no anchor nothing,in fact we had to lend them some rope to tie the blinking thing up with back in harbour.

Another example ,2 men in a motorsailer almost run down by a container ship they"thought was at anchor" then admitting they were lost ,in perfect visibility and flat calm conditions.

No doubt as a lifeboat man you encounter these clowns on a regular basis. But its these clowns who need educating,The man who invites you aboard to do a sea check is obviously allready a sensible chap who probably has most of what he needs.

I think a leaflet campaign at public slipways would have more effect. in my experience this is where the dickheads seem to come from.Club members will pick up knowledge and advise from fellow members ,On average the users of boating forums will probably be a cut above average. Its the totally inexperienced that buy a speed boat sailing dinghy or whatever ,launch it at a public slip totally ill prepared who need talking to.

If anyone has read this far I have not got a problem with Lifeboats post, If you think you dont need his advise then dont read his posts but dont give the man a hard time for trying to improve sea safety.

In a lifetime of sailing and working at sea I have never needed the RNLI but I am very glad they are there if I ever do.

Re: Irritating? Yes indeed.

I feel very sad that a fellow sailor!!!!! should respond to "Lifeboats" post as you have in this instance. If you don't agree with his principles that's fine but don't act like a total pratt!!! don't worry your normal clowns will be back on Skuttlebutt soon and you will be able to talk non boaty drivel till the cows come home.

Safe sailing to you and your crew.....that's if you have any prepared to sail with a total pratt!!

Paul.

Re: Irritating? Yes indeed.

My understanding of this forum is that it is a place for boating folk to ask for advice about matters where their own knowledge is lacking. When the advice is offered it is up to the original poster whether they heed the advice. You, however, are tendering unsolicited advice which we haven't asked for and that leaves us with the impression you are trying to teach us. Given that you won't identify yourself, you could be some schoolboy having a laugh, so IMHO either put up or shut up. You may think you know more than we do about certain things but don't bet on it, Pal! I know we all have the greatest respect and admiration for the frontline guys and gals of the RNLI, if you are one of them and you are kosher what's the problem of saying who you are. You are being shifty so I suggest you bugger off and think about things. You've had enough negative feedback now to have got the message.

Lifeboat, please take heed of some of the more rational comments here - multiple identical posts are generally discouraged...you also have to be a little careful about taking a preaching stance about any issue on any unmoderated forum, lest you wind up with replies that don't turn out to be so helpful in the context of your intentions.

There are members of the RNLI HQ team that post from time to time on here; your involvement is welcome but a high majority of the target audience are on the responsible side of the boating community - I'm sure everyone would welcome engagement with your experiences at that level.

A reminder to some of the posters here that there are specific rules about the abuse of forum users - please respect them.
