Gibraltar has fallen

We are in Barbate, heading to Gibraltar tomorrow for 3 months. I guess that means we're f@#ked. Well done Labour another stunning failure of negotiation.
Says “All parties have committed to finalising a UK-EU treaty text on Gibraltar as quickly as possible, the UK government said.” On BBC app…..so the agreement is not (presumably) in immediate effect, if i’s are still to be dotted etc….Its more an agreement in principal, for the moment. Or that’s how I’m reading it.

You may get your 3 months Schengen respite, this time round 🤞

PS A long schlep, from where you are, but friends, resetting their boat’s EU VAT exemption clock, are very much enjoying Cap Monastir, in Tunisia.

We have our fingers crossed too. It was incredibly difficult to get a 3 month berth in Gibraltar in the first place. I can't see how Spanish officials could come along to the marina and say 'do one....you haven't got enough Schengen days left '. I am not usually overtly political but it seems to be a monumental failure in negotiations when EU citizens have a greater right to stay in Gibraltar than British citizens.

Transiting yachties are simply not a big enough chunk of the economic pie to expect everybody else to follow rules based around what works for us.
Gibraltar is economically linked very strongly to Spain. That's why the remain vote was 96%. The overwhelming majority want a friction free border.

Gib seems happy with the deal. They didn’t vote like idiots in 2016.

‘Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo also welcomed the agreement, saying: "I have worked hand in glove with the UK government throughout this negotiation to deliver the deal Gibraltar wants and needs – one that will protect future generations of British Gibraltarians and does not in any way affect our British sovereignty."’

The Gibraltar economy relies on free flow of frontier workers to work in the financial industry. A few yachties don't put enough in to the economy to make a blind bit of difference.

You have to remember that
1) in the referendum in the early 2000s, Gibraltar declared the people of Gibraltar will never compromise, give up or trade their sovereignty or their right to self-determination; that Gibraltar wants good, neighbourly, European relations with Spain; and that Gibraltar belongs to the people of Gibraltar and is neither Spain's to claim nor Britain's to give away.

2) the UN recognises Gib as a non-self governing territory - a step on the decolonisation path. Many states no longer support the British government position (this includes the EU).

3) Spain threatened to veto the Brexit agreement, so May delegated negortiation over Gibraltar's future status.

So much for the wintering over in Gib option.
"However, it will apply Schengen rules to Britons arriving in Gibraltar who are not resident there. This means they could be turned away at the border if they have already spent 90 days in the Schengen zone over a 180-day period."
UK and Spain strike ‘historic’ deal over Gibraltar’s future and borders
You are quoting the Guardian as your source! Don’t quote that lot of clowns please. There is actually nothing in the information out there that British citizens will be treated as entering the Schengen zone when entering Gibraltar, contrary to what the Guardian asserts. I doubt that will happen. What’s more the details of the agreement have yet to be finalised and what’s even more the non-agreement has yet to be ratified. Where we are is barely further forwards than where the UK was in 2016 in starting to agree the details of Brexit divorce terms.

Parties agreed to establish dual Gibraltar and Schengen border checks at Gibraltar port and airport - to be carried out in full cooperation between the EU and UK/Gibraltar authorities, removing all checks at the crossing point between Gibraltar and La Linea for the many thousands of people who travel across daily in both directions. For the EU, full Schengen checks will be carried out by Spain. For the UK, full Gibraltar checks will continue to be carried out as they are today.

Parties agreed on the principles underpinning the future customs union between the EU and Gibraltar, providing for strong cooperation between the respective customs authorities and removing checks on goods. There is also agreement on the principles of indirect taxation to be applied in Gibraltar, including on tobacco - that will avoid distortions and contribute to the prosperity of the whole region.

The official government communique suggests full Schengen checks at Gib airport and port administered by Spain and a removal of the border at La Linea. Sounds like a great deal for Gib. If UK citizens aren't checked, they'd then be free to wander to La Linea and be in the EU unchecked - not going to happen.

The only logical way for things to work is for a facility to exist for Brits to get their entry to Gib cancelled in effect by a stamp out from Gib if entering Spain. There has to be a second exit stamp. It is not decided though, like I said, contrary to what the Guardian wrote.

I didn't quote the Guardian, I quoted the official Gibraltar Government website.

"removing all checks at the crossing point between Gibraltar and La Linea"
