Gibb winches servicing

I have 2 Gibb 40STA winches that could do with a service. I have stripped them as far as the self tailor but can't get the self tailor off. I presume they just sit on a splined shaft and and are binding as I can't see any fixings. After that it looks like the winch barrels lift off. Anyone stripped one of these before. I have sprayed on a load of WD40 and will see if they free up...

If they are the same as my 50s then yes, everything lifts off once you have removed the two circlips. PBO printed an article of mine about servicing them within the past year.

My ST25s were dismantled by giving a sharp tap to the stripper mechanism and un screwing Anti clockwise using a rubber hammer or block of wood. Clean all parts in parafin and lightly grease.

By way of a PS, Gibb spares are like hens' teeth, but I found that standard Lewmar pawl springs fitted the Gibb 40s I had on a previous boat.

Have a little Gibb that works the genoa reefing and is a bit tired.

out of paperclips. I've never tried it though. Do lewmar pawls fit as well?

I have Gibbs, not sure of the size, but it's lacking the circlip. The middle bit stays put. Its needs a service and grease, but if I loosen the middle bit, it willsubsequently fall out..any source for these circlips?

Here's a pic of the ST25 stripper arm being re-assembled. I would think that the ST40 is similar.

My ST25s date from 1979 I think. I believe your 50s are newer. I wonder what's the age of the OP's winches is.

They come apart the same as the ST25 Ghostly says about above.
