HI All,

I am about to make an appointment to view a Gib sea 312. It is a 1991 model. It has been out of the water since beginning of 2007 as the owners have emigrated. Apparently everything was winterised correctly before the boat was left.

My main concern is that she is under £25k which makes me wonder what is wrong?

She was epoxied in 2007. The engine is the original but with the boat being only 1991 I imagine it has life left in it.

Is there anything to look for on these boats which is more common than normal. Also what are general thoughts on this boat?

Obviously a survey would be done before we buy but any tips on things to look out for which aren't always obvious would be great before the expense of a survey.

Many Thanks
Ian

25k sounds about right for a 91, 312 that someone wants to sell..... They are nice boats.. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Something prime with a bunch of gear may go for 30 or so, but if they have emigrated I suspect thats driving the price.

I researched Gibsea some months ago and figured that the 312 was a good buy, generally underpriced in comparison to other talked about brands. Little unfortunate in your case that the owners have emigrated - it is always useful to discuss the boats history with the seller if that opportunity arises. If you know where she was sailed perhaps you can get some backgrounfd info on her. Proceed with caution, ask as many questions as you need. In my case i concentrate on hull, engine, standing rigging and sails, and attempt to assess right how long before I replace that ...most other things are fairly minor. You may have found yourself a bargain. In my case, my own boat did not sell so unfortunately my upsizing did not proceed.

I was also interested a Gibsea 312 recently, £25k does seem like a good price even better if you could get something off the asking price. I would be asking for a sea trial to make sure all is ok with the engine. At least if the boat is out of the water you could get a survey first and if all is OK get her lifted in for a trial.
One Problem I discovered was headlining coming down and the foam backing turning to dust. This was on a couple of models that were slightly older but only 4 or 5 years so you would have that to look forward to. Some were built with yanmar 2GM20 engines but I think later ones had a 3GM30 definitely a bonus if it has the 3gm30.

I'm not conversant with the 312 but I do sail a Gibsea Master 96 circa 1987 and it's a great boat. Strong, well built and the most comfortable boat I've ever been on. My cuz is a boat-builder and he says that the earlier Gibsea were better built than the later boats i.e. the 96 is better than the 312's.

I don't want to put you off but why not see if there's any 96's out there? A quick google shows 96's circa 86-89 to be running at about £27K. Most were fitted with Yanmar 2GM20 engines and I can promise you that if you can find a well looked after 96 you'll never be disappointed.

Peter.

Hi Everyone, thank you for the replies.

I keep trying to contact the broker but he is always busy and says he will call me back but never does, does he not want to sell the boat??!!

The engine fitted is stated as a Yanmar 2gm 16hp which I presume is the 2gm20 which we have fitted on our current Mirage and is a brilliant engine.

We had the headlining problem on our current boat, we had a quote of nearly £3,000 just to replace it so with nail and seal and a hoover we got all the broken down foam out and glued it back, hasn't moved in 5 years. Don't know if I would fancy doing it all again!

We decided we wanted something modern and fairly new so you have the white plastic bathrooms etc. (SWMBO not me lol) Initially we were looking for a bavaria but they seem quite expensive as they are still fairly new and im not sure about the saildrive.

Although this Gib sea is a fin/bulb keel it does come with beaching legs.
