I’m slightly puzzled by the account of the OP’s chap motoring backwards downwind, but I suppose that if the dodgers and sprayhood are that prominent it just might work. Every boat I have had would have twiddled round stern to wind in those conditions. Backing out of a marina alley is something that I have often had to do, especially with my current boat whose saildrive and limited rudder movement limits my ability to power into the wind. I have not cruised with an outboard, but essentially the problems remain the same.
Well that’s it the lane between the lines of boats was too narrow to get the stern up into the wind ,according to the owner he was condemned to swing stern downwind, maybe if the boat hada inboard engine it might have paddled the stearn into the wind

Unless the outboard is way too small for the boat, or he has horrifically messed up the prop size, an outboard will be better than an inboard at dragging the stern to where you want it. Inboards are massively more civilised if you’ve got a long way to motor, but I’d sooner have an outboard for doing pirouettes in a marina.

I was watching the activities in Yarmouth from the castle with the northerly blowing at weekend and saw a shiny newish X5 about 50 foot neatly backing down into a berth stern to much like a med parking approach- I suspect a delivery crew of 2 on board but they made it look fairly simple even with the wind direction.

As the op I thinkI should clarify that the outboard was not swiveled round the engine had remote controls in the cockpit, undoubtably turning the engine the boat could easily be turned into the wind on backing out of the berthh6(

I must buy a copy to see if our patent method of getting a sulky tri alongside is included. I put SWMBO over the bow onto the pontoon, having driven in bows first. She makes off the bow line, then stern line at an appropriate point on the pontoon. I set to with a cockpit coaming winch, and in she comes, regardless of any cross wind. No dignity, but no damage.

The outboard will no doubt have had no effect on the rudder. In that case it is a bit like my saildrive with a gap between prop and rudder, and turning into the wind can be a problem, and something I take care to avoid in tight spots. I still find it hard to imagine a sailing boat that will weathercock facing the wind, though it is a while since I sailed a boat without a furling jib.

What was wrong with this one? Something that might stand you in good stead and always has don for me is, you get what you pay for in life
Yes but our modest budget can encompass last weekends offering which was very unsuitable with a possible leak anda real bodge or a simple small boat well presented, going to see a Supermistralthis weekend which in theory is clean and simple
