In that neck of the woods this weekend and am wondering if any of you know of points on the river where I can row my ancient dog ashore in the dinghy and let him stretch his legs. I guess I mean points where there's perhaps a bit less mud to deal with. Also, I’d welcome any info on nice quiet anchorages on either river.

You can anchor anywhere in the Roach until you meet the moorings at Paglesham. Best spot is in the Yolkesfleet where you’ll be very close to a lot of seal action. You can get ashore close to HW at Paglesham Pool or there is a short jetty just upstream of Paglesham - see this thread: Paglesham landing

There was a landing point on to Foulness Island just inside the entrance to the Roach at the 'Quay' which enabled foot access along a designated footpath to the Pub at Churchend. I believe the pub has gone, do the MoD still permit access?

Yes, you can land at The Quay, in the Roach, at most states of the tide as long as the MOD red flags are not flying and you stick to the public footpaths.

What's the situation at Paglesham nowadays?
There was a time when the landowners seemed very anti yachties and landing was actively discouraged. The Crouch Harbour Authority made a landing place just inside Paglessham Pool to get round this.
I've heard that the situation has now improved but not been there for a while.
Shame that the George & Dragon closed, that was an experience!

The Plough and Sail was always a pleasant pub and eatery. Whether you can still get there via what was a boatyard would be good to know. The George and Dragon on Foulness was a must visit for E. Coast sailors. I got told off for drinking a pint outside a closed Post Office next door by the grumpy landlord at the time.

If your dog is a digger I would advise caution around Foulness, though if he's ancient he probably has more sense.

There is no history of Ordnance in the roach or yokesfleet but there is along the Thames shore of Foulness island and within the firing range of foulness sands

My experience is from way back in 1974, and there has probably been extensive further clearance since then, but I'd be surprised if they got it all.

240 mm WW1 trench mortar bombs were widespread, (including many on the public beach at Shoeburyness, outside the range perimeter marking) and tended to be quite shallow. These are fairly alarming because they are quite big and the fins give them a resemblance to a small German WW2 aerial bomb, but, unlike a German WW2 aerial bomb, they are unlikely to still be functional.

Vorsprung durch technic, probably

My more recent history does not go back that far but the situation now is nothing like your experience, luckily. 😀

Re Paglesham and access to Plough and Sail I was there July 2024. The pontoon/jetty is used by the boatyard for its building and refitting of barges as you can see from the attached picture ( taken at low water) and yes I believe they do not want you to use it. It was a weekend so I saw no-one about. However there is a hard right next to it to left in the picture marked by post, a little uneven and cracked but usable which I used and space at the top to leave a dinghy whilst you stroll for a good pint at the pub. Take your pick from George's Wallasea Wench, Adnams Ghost ship.
I believe there is another landing a little downstream.

I believe the hard described is the original hard adjacent to the ‘old black Shuttlewood’s shed’, sadly now gone. It once stood behind the house boats in the photo. Also behind the houseboats is a little quay. The post is one of two old scrubbing posts that stood on a widened part of the hard.
The RSA landing is a little further upriver.
