Does anyone know the value of taking the coastal German boat licence?
Can I get the RYA to issue an ICC with it?

A German citizen needs it to operate a boat in coastal waters (with anything with over 5hp). As far as I know an Englishman can sail his boat in the Netherlands or Germany without any licence.

The licence is for the Sportbootfuhrershein See.

It would allow you to skipper a German registered boat. German registry would mean having to comply with the laws of Germany i.e. a German boat liscence.

I doubt that you could obtain an ICC from the RYA with it as that [ICC] is for UK registered craft. That also means that a UK ICC doesn't cover you for a German registered boat.

In practice you can get around that when chartering by a port official (I think) endorsing your ICC for the duration of the charter.

There is also a possibility of running into trouble in a country that hasn't signed up to UN Resolution 40 in that they may not recognise an ICC.

Finally.... Make sure you get an ICC relevant to the boating you intend. CEVNI for the French canals, if you want to take a rib into coastal waters don't do your ICC on a lake.

There are changes afoot too.......

Good Luck

Dave.

Being based in Maastricht, why don't you pop over to Aachen and go see the ADAC. I suppose they can issue an ICC based on your German license... Like our Dutch ANWB does with the Vaarbewijs.

cheers and happy sailing

Hallo!

I had to do the SBF See. There was a thread on it when I lost my temper with the whole beauraucratic moneyspinning thing last winter!

The body that give this licence (Deutscher Segeln Verein DSV I seem to remember) told me that:

-Foreigners are able to sail without it in german waters for up to one year (don't ask me how they control this)

-but if you are resident in germany (foreign or not) you must have it.

Other than the fact that I had to do it in German (I hadn't long been learning German) and there are as many special extra German col. regs as international ones, it was very easy. If zou are dutch then presumablz (sorrz but bugger this german kezboard with the y and z changed - i give up correcting them!) zou can read german easilz enough though?

you have to have a medical with a doctor first too.

wrt RZA and ICC - I would be interested to know how accepted it is abroad too, I have been told the SBF See is widelz acceptable, but I don*t know. I thought the ICC was onlz needed in uk as we dont have a boat driving license, and if zou had one from another countrz then it wasn*t needed, but again I*m not sure.

I*d guess the RZA would know the answers?

back to regretting the jaegemeister from last night!

Schwer mit dieser blöde deutche Tastatür!
You can always change the keyboard language in the toolbar on the bottom right (if you're using windows that is).
Good to know you found the exam easy. My concern is of course the choice 33 out of 360 possbile questions, all to be properly understood and answered in German.
I'll let you know how it went.

The prblem is I*m in Lisbon on a portuguese kezboard that is changed to German, its mz freinds mac and I don*t know how to change it back, too much for mz fried mind todaz!

I found it easz because I did nothing else but read the classic red book (cant remember the author but its verz good) for 6 months! But I am also new to a lot of the stuff, so if zou know it alreadz should be easz

I was also worried about the 33 from 360 Qs, but there are onlz 20 exam sheets and thez select the q*s so that there aren*t too manz hard ones. Zou can buz these 20 exam sheets.

But zou are right, theres a lot of it and to learn it in a language that i wasnt familiar with made it much harder! I bet thez had a laugh about mz written answers- ´stupid Island Monkez!`

Have fun!
