forgive my sharp learning curve but could anyone explain if generators provide heat as well as power and if so can they be govened like a central heating boiler.
ie. to come on and off acording to temp via the thermostat.
sorry for the ignorance. trying to learn the basics..

Theoretically there is nothing to prevent a set-up onboard which switches in a generator , either when a specific load is required (heaters/ cooker microwave hair dryer, bilge pump etc), or when a battery voltage reaches a specific level. It would be expensive and personally would not want to rely on it.

In general no. They just provide 240v when switched on. So you could plug in an electric fan heater say, but that would be all. But no they're not really heaters

you could spend £11K on a Whispergen unit that produces 750watts of power and 5.5Kw of heat.. well you could if you wanted!

Well it's a bit yes & no. My genny does ring main with electric heaters everywhere. The exhaust from the genny goes through a coil in the hot water tank (not a piddly little calorifier) and it also powers an immersion heater. So there's no reason why you couldn't do central heating but personally I can't be bothered cos the electric heaters are fine anyway.
