I need a new generator. Am I right in thinking that a 1000w suitcase inverter geni could charge my house batteries directly without a battery charger. They seem to have a 12 volt outlet but what's to stop it over charging.

Yes they often can but the number of amps is limited. I think my Honda eu22 is 8A at 12V (and not smart at all) vs 50A on the house charger (fully smart charging) which runs at 240V from the same genset. 12v 50A is 600W so no issue at all for a 1000W genny, just connect to your shore power inlet.

You need a 14v supply to charge your batteries. 12v is just not enough. As said use a battery charger on the 240v AC outlet. (unless of course the "12v output" is designed for battery charging. ol'will
