Generator for a 40ft yacht to run Fride and Air conditioning ?

[ QUOTE ]
Is it a good idea for liveaboarders to have generators?

Is this regarded as an essential piece of kit?

I'm glad i don't let my wife see this forum with foul language like that!

Next she would be questioning me wanting a water maker and another new dinghy, and, and, and....... errr... a dive compressor!!! knew there was something else /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a FP gen set. It is about 8 years old. It has done 245 hours. In the last 100 hours, since I have had the boat, it has had the following failures.

1. Alternator frame gasket failure allowing water leakage. required lift out of set and opening up of alternator end to repair.
2. Cooling pump shaft failure
3. Exhaust outlet casting failure allowing water/gas leakage
4. Engine core plug failure.

would I buy another, not a cat in hells chance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

on our 45ft ketch, we have an Entec 4.2 kva Genset outputting 115v through a Xantrex 2500w invertor/battery charger and back to the A/C panel via a 32 amp breaker. We run a 16,000btu reverse cycle ac and u-line refrigerator and icemaker plus water heater etc. from this, and the hour meter is currently showing 1272 hrs since 1999 and as far as I can see from receipt etc, there has never been any major problems with this unit. If running the ac either on heat or cool and the water heater on a cold tank, then it can trip the breaker until the cold water heats up, so we just turn off the ac for an hour or so until the water heats up. To be fair, we haven't run the gen set a lot, as I think if at anchor it could be a real pain with the noise etc. We will just have to see what we need when the time comes.

I have a Fischer Panda 4 with 300 hrs runtime. In the last 100 hrs I have had problems 1. 2. and 4. in DaiB's mail. Probably will get 3. and something else as well soon. Would I recommend Fischer Panda to anyone? No chance in hell. The worst piece of equipment on my boat, by far. If you talk to FP, they always blame installation but that is bull. My FP was installed by FP and the problems are clearly design, not installation.
