Gearbox Oil question

I have a Hurth gearbox which has Automatic Transmission Fluid in it.

Do I need to suck out the old ATF and replace, If so , how often.

Also, the dipstick is attached to the filler plug. I can never remember if it should be screwed in when checking the level, or just resting on the top. Suggestions please?
Thanks

There's a drain plug IIRC, sucking out might be easier though, but routine replacement of the ATF isn't really necessary, just topping up. Change it if you wish though. The level is checked with the threads just resting on the casing.
The dip-stick is also the breather, exiting at the side of the hexagon. It's worthwhile to make sure this is clear.
edit. Just looked at my engine manual. It recommends g/box ATF change every 750 hrs.

I replace my g/box oil every year.I dont replace the filter every year but put in a jam jar with white spirit in and close lid and shake. The oil level is taken with dip stick not screwed in.Best to do after engine has not been run for a while,to let oil drain back from oil cooler,if you,ve got one.Refill run engine and immediately check oil level, top up if needed.

I dont know all the Hurth models but the 63A (fitted to VP D4 and some D6, cummins 4.2L range) runs on ATF dexron III, recommended change is every 24 months and filter change every 24 months (as John says the filter is metal and is easy to clean).
you need one of these http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cgg500-500cc-oil-suction-gun
Full copy workshop service manual for 4.2L mercruiser (includes hurth ZF 630 /63 gear box ) here
