the gear box is almost off the dipstick

the boat came with two bottles of engine oil but no gear box oil

I have a terrible web conection

does anyone know what oil I should out in

I can hicth to oban to get some more before I set off against the tide and run the engine hard agaINST the flood

I did try downloading the pdf of the engine manual but the web here is 2g

It depends a lot on what gearbox is fitted. Can you confirm which one you have. some have a specialist oil although I've heard that engine oil is ok and my Beta 14 takes Auto Transmission fluid.
If there's not much fluid in the gear box as a temp measure then any lubricating oil is better than none, but change at the earliest opportunity.

Just to amplify on ballyabroad's comments, Dylan:
As said, you need to check which gearbox it has. Various different ones could be specified, but the PRM80 is probably the most common.
The same oil as the engine used to be specified for the PRM, but about six years ago this changed to ATF (after some boxes showed clutch cone problems). Depending how old your non-existant manual is, it could have specified either, but ATF is now preferred.

As others have said the type of oil depends on te gearbox fitted.

There is a table in the manual if you can download it from the above link but even that advises referring the gearbox manufacturers website:

Attempt to copy below

TM93/A .. Oil .. 2.4 L
TM170/A .. Oil .. 2.8 L

ZF 25/A .. ATF .. 1.8 L
ZF 45/A .. ATF .. 2.5 L
ZF 15 MIV .. ATF .. 1.0 L
ZF 63 IV .. ATF .. 4.0 L

PRM 80 .. ATF .. 0.6 L
PRM 120 .. ATF .. 0.8 L
PRM 150 .. Oil .. 1.4 L
PRM 260 .. Oil .. 1.5 L
PRM 500 .. Oil .. 2.5 L

Just to reassure you Dylan, if the dipstick is the usual short one a couple of inches long and the oil level is still visible on the dipstick then you will still have a lot of oil in the box so having a low level will not be disasterous, particularly if you can avoid running at full throttle for sustained periods. It's still best to top up as soon as convenient but if I had to choose between topping up with the wrong fluid or leaving it a bit longer until I can obtain the correct one, I personally would go for leaving it. :)

Gearbox will be either a TMC 40/60 or a PRM 120 which all use ATF.
According to my Beta manual, PRM 'boxes use engine oil, 15w/40.
TMC 'boxes use ATF. The TMC40 'box, commonly fitted to the B25 inc. mine, holds only 0.2 l of ATF, so prolonged running at low level might be unwise.

See my post above.

All the info is copied from the Maintenance manual for The Beta "small engine range"; 10, 14, 16, 20 and 25

in the manual they do say that a gear box manual is also issued with each engine and refer the user to that. i guess Mrs Winter has thrown that away as well.

I seem to remember she threw all the manuals away once before ...

I perhaps should have said that my Beta manual is referring to PRM 'boxes types 80 and 120, but definitely 15W/40 oil.
Since my 'box is a TMC, I didn't get a PRM maker's manual with the engine.
Perhaps the type of oil doesn't really matter very much after all !!

See my post #4 above, and the apparent discrepancy will be explained:

Thanks for tghis chaps

when I lowered myself head first into the engine compartment I sawa a small sticker that said that it had to use ATF only

I amanged to buy a litre from the yard on Loch Feochan

colin is a very nice man

now back under way and heading for dunstaffnage

laundry, shopping, fix the echo sounder etc etc

A slight thread drift. Does anyone else have trouble seeing the level on the PRM dipstick, or is it just my eyesight? I often have to soak it onto a paper towel to see the oil.

Indeed (though not a PRM). I cut a short wooden dipstick, and the oil shows up fine on that. Also, when topping up, I have a tape mark on plastic pipe to suction pump - overfill slightly, put pipe in up to tape mark, suck.
