Sorry, this is from a completely non-technical person.
We have an old gear box and old engine. The engine (Volvo 65 ph, 25+ yrs old) works very well. The problem is the cable from the gear box to the gear stick - we have had some experts look at it and fiddle and charge lots, but we still have trouble getting into forward gear, unless the separate throttle lever is in neutral - and it can appear to be absolutely in neutral, but still not be, if you see what I mean, and therefore forward gear will not engage.
A friend suggested it's a cable problem; the experts say they cannot adjust it any further, and have replaced it, and still say they cannot adjust it. Surely, if it's a cable problem, it can be solved? Manually, the gear can be shifted from neutral to forward to reverse.
I just cannot stand the uncertainty of the forward gear, especially in the confined spaces of a marina, lock or busy harbour. A new gear box etc is very expensive, and I dont think necessary, as the gears dont jump out of gear, once engaged.
Help and suggestions and the phone no of that saintly little bloke up the river (pref E coast) much appreciated.
