I am planning on a three month trip to the top of Norway this summer. The information I have got so far is that only propane bottled gas is available so I will need to change my regulator but will I be able to exchange a 4.5kg calor bottle or will I need to use a local Norwegian suppliers bottle when we need a refill.

Last time over there I took 2 Calor propane (3.9Kg) bottles and didn't run out (almost 3 months) . I think lots of boats in Norway use the Camping Gaz style? It's pretty widely available though not the best value. Local Norwegian propane bottles would probably attract costly bottle deposits?
I use Propane in Scotland as butane does not work well at low temperatures....

I think it's good advice to take as much gas with you as you can - if you can.

My experience is over 10 years old, but my memory is that northern and southern Norway had different bottle threads, the changeover being around Bergen.

(My troubles were compounded in Shetland because of a dispute between the gas supplier there and Calor. I was banking on getting my propare refilled but couldn't)

I assume you'll be taking this: http://www.rccpf.org.uk/pilots/9/Norway which says there is no butane in Norway. All Norwegian bottles are propane
( as you'd expect given the winter temperatures)

To answer your specific question - you'll need to change to Norwegian bottles.

I am also hoping to get to Norway this year for 2-3 months. A converter to attach a Calor butane regulator to a Norwegian bottle:

www.whayward.com/Details.cfm?ProdID=539

Although at that price it may be cheaper to get a Norwegian propane regulator. I am taking an extra length of lowpressure red hose with me in case the Norwegian bottles won't fit the Calor sized gas locker, and I have a tuck a bottle in the back of the cockpit.

And previous replies... Most Norwegians don't sail outside mid May -end July. Short-ish season by Scottish standards, and honestly not much colder. Propane might be more popular north of Bergen. Take plenty Calor with you?
