You're not being entirely daft, BUT...

If there's enough gas, a diesel engine could rev out of control - and I mean rev - think your 2000rpm donk spining at 1000+. Then think shrapnel! The only way to stop it is to block the air intakes, but you really don't want to be that close to it!

However, any of the more sensible methods of detection should ensure that there isn't enough gas for this to happen.
