Can anyone tell me what size gas pipe I should be using for a 2 Burner, Grill & Oven Cooker. Cooker requirements are 28,250 BTU/Hr. Using Butane and with a 4 metre pipe run with bulkhead fitting, test point & tap. System was previously 1/4 in. but boatyard engineer reckons on 3/8 in. I think excessive and 5/16 in. would suffice. Anyone know different, or conversion of BTU to Kilowatts?

don't know the answer myself but my corgi registered fitter had a table of sizes.

the size he used for my boat was 8mm o.d. for a 3-burner hob plus oven.

Btu/h divided by 3412 = kW/h

I'm a CORGI engineer, haven't got the ticket for marine work.

Thanks Mike. Do you know the pipe size required for say 30,000 BTU/Hr or 8.5 KW/Hr?

8mm / 5/16 will be ok but if you need to have a survey/BSS in the near future then run it by your surveyor/insurance Co. to be on the safe side. If you go to your local library they will have a copy of BS5482 Pt 3 on CD and you will be able to copy the sizing table from the BS.

I have probably a similar if not identical set up to you, maybe 6m rather than 4m.

I am using 8mm pipe and fittings, the guy who will be surveying it said that is fine, the cooker has 8mm pipe which is what swayed my decision.

Remember to only use compression joints.

I find http://www.socal.co.uk/best.html very useful in determining gas piping/fitting requirements. I see that they say 8 mm but a possible requirement to increase. Searching the site may give more info.
