GAS LOCKER

My insurers are giving me problems as my boat does not have a gas locker. It
previously had a double burner with the cylinder attached underneath. Due to
the arrangement of the cockpit lockers I think that I am going to have problems
getting the locker high enough for leaking gas to drain out without sea water getting
in. Either that or it will block the access to the locker for anything else.
Also, what can the container be made of? Could I use a strong plastic bucket, or
does it need to be made of metal or GRP? The cylinders I am using are camping
gaz 904. Any ideas? (I`m not keen on the bottles being mounted on deck)

My Jaguar 25 has no self draining locker, so the gas bottle lives in a deep cockpit locker next to the deisel tank........ but the insurers were/are happy as long as I have a gas alarm installed.......

I had a similar problem when the surveyor reported a bad gas set up. I made a fire resistant glass fibre locker. www.cfsnet.co.uk glassfibre supplies can supply the resin. www.calormarineshop.co.uk can give excellent info on the requirements for lockers and they sell gas alarms. When it comes to connecting up, the insurers may ask for it to be done by a qualified Corgi Marine fitter who may be difficult to find. You might also need to consider replacing the cooker if it doesnt meet current safety standards! It could be a lot cheaper to consider replacing the cooker with a meths or paraffin burner.

I had a similar problem on a vivacity 20 many years ago - I made a locker to fit a calor gas cyl(the smallest on) and fitted it underneath the top of one of the side benches as close to the stern as possible. I then fitted a round lockable plastic lid - BOMAR is the make although you can get some cheaper Italian ones now after cutting a hole in the side bench. Then a vent overboard thro' the transom. The box was made of plywood but I believe it has to be fireproof nowadays. I believe a Calor Gas Centre on the South Coast somewhere can supply this, they specialise in Marine installations - sorry don't know the place or tel no.
