Gas fitting on board

When we bought our boat, the surveyor said that the way the gas locker is fitted is wrong, something to do with the drains. In the course of a major re-wiring project, HWMBO has dismantled the gas locker because it was in the way, so now it's definitely not up to par!

What we need is someone (must they be CORGI, like at home?) to re-build the locker, properly this time, check over the cooker and make sure it's safe and install a new bottle of gas and associated hoses etc.

How do we find such a someone, and what is this job likely to cost us? Also, if we have to replace the cooker (2 burners and a grill), what might that cost?

Assuming you are not on the Inland waterways you do not need a Corgi fitter (Even on the IW you probably don't to fit the gas locker .... just to do the gas installation)

You can buy gas lockers (at a price) from Calor marine if you wish. Lots of useful info on the site as well (Incl the Boat safety scheme!)

If you decide to use the services of a Corgi installer to do the gas system you will need one who is authorised to work on LPG and who also works on boats.

In theory there is the facility to find such an animal on the Corgi website

Should add that if you use the corgi "find an installer" leave it set to "in your home"

You can get a comprehensive booklet from Calor which describes the ideal gas system - you may be able to download it. As far as I know you don't need a CORGI fitter (most won't do marine anyway) Any competent DIYer can do it - the Calor booklet is very good. As far as the cooker is concerned, all new ones now have Flame Failure Devices fitted on all burners, which is an excellent safety feature. New small cookers with a grill and 2 burners are about £300, or cheaper if you search around - try caravan dealers, usually the same as marine but cheaper!(but you may have to get gimbals a s an extra). If you can't DIY then your local boatyard should be able to help.

If you were able to dismantle the gas locker it was no good anyway. It must be a metal container with sealed seams and drain overboard from the base.

The drain does not have to be from the base if the free space in the locker below the drain, if more than 1" above the base, is minimised.
