I remember seeing in one of the mail order catalogues a portable gas detector shaped like a pencil torch and powered by AA batteries. I can't remember where it was and none of my local chandlers knows of such an instrument.
The principal seems pretty good to me. Does anybody know anything about them and where they might be obtained?

Force 4 have one in their latest catalogue, called Omnitron and costs £49.95, runs on 2 AAA batteries. Cat number 8510016

We have a plumbed in one but nowadays only switch it on occasionally for a test, because it consumes about 0.3A which adds up to 8AH/day if left on continuosly. So far it has only ever detected the spray adhesive I use to stick some lining in a locker back in place and the overspill when I refilled a gas BBQ lighter close by it!

I bought one last month from QVC shopping channel for £29.99. Use it every time I go back on board. Excellent wee jobbie.

I have one of these omnitron ones it is very good for detecting gas of a multitude of types - but find it eats batteries!

Easier than wiring one in though.

More versatile too. Can detect leak anywhere along pipework from bottle to cooker. Many thanks for your replies. I shall visit my local caravan shop.
