Gas cookers and Gas storage

Interesting stuff

Having just having had a gas box built, I was wandering how long it would it take a small 23ft boat to "fill" with the dangerous level of gas, all things being equal. Guess I will have to work out volume and times by 17....

Hopefully, the stenching agent would alert me way before the dangerous level was reached.

The 17 minutes figure is based on one typical burner turned on full.

A big leak, from a failed pipe/hose could get there much more quickly. small leak from a leaky joint could well take a lot longer.

Coming to the conclusion that there is no substitute for a gas alarm system apart from sensible procedures.

arrogant preaching

Another supporter for VicS and pragmatic safety.

I hate big government and over legislation. I have a reasonable gas installation on my boat and manage my gas use carefully but it is an old cooker without a flame failure device.

My boat was surveyed this autumn with the recommendation to fit a modern gas detector which i have done.

If we take this argument to its logical conclusion we will be banning cars without airbags and abs next.

I will decide what risks i take in life and take care to manage those risks carefully but i will not be preached to and told i must buy something because it is an essential safety item.

When my number is up so be it.

You will be suggesting not going sailing because it is too risky next.

Sailors are by their nature people who measure risk all the time. This debate splits hairs over safe and safer which is why it is winding people up and has got out of hand.

I think Vic S has carefully thought through what he has done with his eyes open and understands the risks which he has chosen to take. I support him in that

I dont disagree but check the OP he wants to know how to best to go about it.

Dispite all i have said above I have a day sailer that i have a small picnic type hob with built in gas can that breaks all the rules.

Mark "I" nose can and does fail to smell; allergies, asthma, hay fever, dust and viruses all can impair smell very significantly.

A properly fitted and serviced gas detector (keep it dry and test with a gas fag lighter), is in my opinion, an essential item in any gas installation on a yacht, simply for the time that the leak risk is realised due to human error or otherwise.

All the other integrity devices are garnish when compared to switching off at the bottle.

Hope your 2010 sailing season is a good one.

gas ligthers

Speaking of gas lighters
the lighters themselves and the refill cans contain gas that is unstenched

and a can of the liguid when released to atmosphere will create approx 250 cans of pure gas vapour

Piezo electric lighters !!

Don't want gas filled lighters or more esp refill cans for those around! No room in the gas locker!

Box of safety matches, sealed up in placcy bag, just in case the lighter does not work.

Same lighter/same box of matches been in use/reserve for 30+ years.
