Garmin GPSMAP 230 internal battey

The Garmin gpsmap 230 carries an iternal rechagable power cell to run the offline memory. Has anyone any idea what is the generic replacement for this item? I think there must be one available through Rs or mapilns.

It'll be a little lithium cell, probably something like a CR2032. If you can open the unit up, it'll be easy enough to spot it and identify it.

I had that problem with a Navman plotter - internal battery fails after about 5 years. I opened it up and discovered it had a battery type that was easily available from Maplin - except Navman had then soldered lugs on it so that it didnt have a poor connection problem. - I was not game to try to do this myself so sent it off for repair £2 battery, repair cost abt £50.

I believe (though haven't tried it for myself) that silver loaded epoxy is the stuff for attaching contacts without using heat for this sort of application. Apart from the cost (£23.35 + VAT for 14g, RS P/N 496-265) it should be a fairly straightforward DIY job.

It may be rechargeable, probably NiCd in that case. (1.2V per cell)
Or it may be Lithium like the CRseries suggested. (3V per cell). Not a good idea to fit one in place of the other!
Best place to start is google the part number on the cell for equivalents, then buy a tagged equivalent or similar from RS, Rapid electronics, Maplin or anywhere you can find on the web. I bought some on ebay a while back from a bloke who gave a big list of equivalents.
You don't need an exact equiv, just big enough in mAh and physically practical, but you want to be sure the voltage and polarity are what you think!
Or maybe solder in a holder?

You can send it off to Garmin for replacement, but just as easy to source one and do it yourself if you are competent to solder.

On this point, we had a battery in a GPS128 replaced bay an alleged Garmin agent in Las Palmas. It failed after three weeks. I got a kit from Steve Birch posted out to Horta and got Mid Atlantic Yacht Services to solder it in for me. They showed me the battery put in by the Las Palmas shower. It was the wroing battery (no solder lugs) and had been stuck in with Sikaflex. One of the old lugs had been respodered across a circuit board track!

Still waiting to hear from Garmin or the agent in Las Palmas on this matter.

The required battery for this unit is a Panasonic BR2032/1F2 The suffix 1F2 represents the variety which has 2 polar lugs attached to allow you to weld it to the circuit board. Garmin refused to replace the battery for me as they said this was an obsolete unit. I thought this was poor as the unit is only 7 years old. Simple job to replace when you have the correct parts.

I cant believe that Garmin treats their customers this way. I have a garmin 180 gps and the same thing happened to me. 2.30 Battery and 30 charge for change of battery. So I opted to do it myself. I couldn,t believe it when I opened the casing the battery given to me by the Garmin dealer was not the same, so I called them and he said that I need to modify it. A quick search on internet and I found the exact battery that i needed for 1.50. I couldnt believe it. I was also told by the dealer that Garmin wont support the product as it is discontinued.
My solution: I went and bought a Lowrance Hds gps........sod Garmin if they treat us this way.

I have the same model however the battery drains off within a few days from 3v to 1.5v. I have checked all rails and cannot see any cross rail solder problems
