I switched on my garmin gps12 today and discovered that all waypoints had gone. Anyone have any idea why this would happen?
There is also something rattling about inside, don't know if this has anything to do with the problem but I would like to know if and how these receivers are opened up.

I had the same problem some years ago, took the device back to Garmin who told me it was a software error and they replaced the machine. The same thing happened again on the replacement so I took it back again - they upgraded me to the next model and I have never had a problem again.

It is probably a wise move to talk to them.

Of course, why didn't I think of that? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The older gps12 had an internal battery that needs to be kept charged. If the 4 batteries inside the garmin run flat, or are taken out for the winter, then the internal battery can go flat and you loose your data. I think the standard charge for Garmin to look at the gps and replace the battery is around £45, but if you ring them they will tell you. They are a helpfull company to deal with.

I think someone told me that the later 12's stored the data in a different format and did not need an internal battery.

This happened to me. I phoned Garmin who suggested that I should put in 4 new batteries and then turn it on, but in simulator mode. They said that with luck this would recharge the internal battery. I tried it and it didn't work, so they said to send it to them, which I did, and they sent me back a new one.
