Has anyone managed to link a GPS to a Jornada 820 handheld PDA? I want to use it effectively as a chart-plotter. The Jornada has both a USB connector and a serial connector (I think) that has a non standard plug ie not a nine pin plug. I'm trying to link it to Pocket Winchart. I have a plug supplied by Garmin which ends in a nine pin plug. Someone has suggested a straightforward male to female connector but I wondered if anybody has actually got this sort of connection to work. At the moment I'm £270 in and still not functioning as a chartplotter.

Anne,
The non 9 pin socket you are referring to sounds like the 15 pin D connector used for connecting to an external monitor. According to the HP spec sheet there is a 9 pin serial connector, it may be hidden under a flap on the underside of the machine. Otherwise you should be able to purchase a USB to 9 Pin Serial adaptor, but you will need to check that your charting software can cope with USB connections.

Anne,

Until recently I had a Jornada 820 and as I glance across my desk I have spotted an obsolete (To me) cable which is the square USB like cable that plugs into the Jornada and goes to a serial port.

Let me know your contact details and I will drop it in the post.

Cheers
