Does anyone have experience of using the Garmin 45GPS.

I have inherited one of 1996 vintage and wondered if they were ok/accurate/reliable etc?

Thanks

I still carry a 1996 Garmin 45 on board as back up to my fixed Garmin. It works and is accurate but is slower owing to the fewer channels (8 rather than 12) also the screen looses a few lines now and then so it can be difficult to read lats and longs at times. No longer supported by Garmin so if it does go wrong it is a throw away. Must be time for me to replace. I will wait for LBS to see what is available.

Mine still works well, but is much slower to lock than the 12 channel receiver. Also, the less sensitive front end, does not work well with the antenna in obscured locations, eg under trees, below deck, front of car. You can use an accessory cable to detatch the antenna, and stick it in a remote location where it has a better view of the sky.

Gave one away with last boat .....

It worked ok - just took a while to log on .........

Suggest that you leave it connected to 12V supply and on for a s long as possible - to get updated almanac data etc. As often they have been left switched off and then data is out of date / lost and they need to re-validate.
The internal batterys - sometimes are duff - meaning that log-on and use is suspect ...... replacement can be done .

A great GPS.

I have both the 45 and the later 48 as handhelds. As has been said, the 45 is slower, but only just. If you weren't comparing, you'd hardly notice.

Has it had the Millennium s/w upgrade?

I used one for years and never ceased to be impressed with it. A friend of mine did a four year circumnavigation with a Garmin 45 as the only bit of electronic kit on board.

I've had mine for eight years. Super little set. I use it to control my TP20 tiller pilot and also to drive my Yeoman plotter. Mine operates from ship's 12V supply and also, if used elsewhere, from its internal batteries.

I believe I can top these tales. I once spent a day crawling, swimming & diving through a flooded underground cave system in S. America - its a long story. I had a Garmin 45 in my pocket. It must have been bashed on rocks 100's of times and it is not claimed to be waterproof. At the end of the day I removed the batteries and shook the water out of the battery compartment. It didn't work, I then discovered the aerial unit was full of water. I dried this over a fire for 48 hours, on reassembly it worked perfectly. Three years later it is still going strong. Of course that was fresh water, I am sure it would have been a different story with salt water.

I still have as secondary kit - Magellan Meridien - I mean the real one - not the later job.

I don't think it as good as the Garmin 50 I had before ..... but still works ok. Only trouble it eats battery's on start up - often flattening the nicds before logging on ! So its a 12V ships supply machine only now.

I wish I had my old Garmin 50 back again !!
