Garmin 276, Maptech & USB

I havet a Garmin 276 and a modern Compaq Centrino laptop. The Garmin comes with a usb connector, which is handy because my computer only has usbs. I can load routes and download tracks and waypoints from the Garmin 276C. However I can't get either Maptech Offshore Navigator or Neptune Passage Planner to find it... in other words I can't use the software live at the moment. Anyone else experience this problem? Anyone found a solution?

agarmins come from the factory configured to talk to other garmin hardware. go to the menu, and look for the com settings and be sure its in and output is nmea.. i think

I use a garmin with maptech and you have to have garmin/garmin interface ??? not mnea.
Won't always find it first time though can be a pain in the arse.
