Galvanic Isolators

I am about to fit shore power to our boat and see that it is recommended that an galvanic isolator is installed. I will probably only be conected at weekends and unplugged during the week.
Should I fit an isolator or is it really neccessary if I'm only connected at weekends?
I assume they are required if you keep a constant connection?

I suspect that it is the "more than a couple of hours" useage that creates the need, I am considering the fit myself, now that I am installing a proper marine charger for my two battery banks.
