Gale Force 7 going on 8

If GC1's SWMBO can put up with him, I would be surprised if a little ripple in the Solent would scare her.

Anyway why you answering for him?/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
what's happened to his Blackberry?/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Someones not stuffed it where the sun don't shine have they? /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Tell him Julie's still waiting for the apology /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Biggest Solent problem I would imagine would be collision avoidance, whereas up here its fun battling mountainous wind and waves and finding someone to talk to on the VHF, well probably.

Is the point not:

He does no know the solent
He had a NEW untested single engined boat
a) He would have ignored the weather forecast posted in the marina
b) He did not check the forecast?
He could have put his crew's life in danger had the untested engine failed, and those of who may have tried to rescue him
He followed a 39ft Squeaker (probably twice the weight of his boat) thinking he could follow in it's wake.. This in it's self proves he thought the waves for his boat where to much.

And last and by no means least, he has addopted the "do as i say not as I do" philosophy, which does not really stack up on the sea....

Powerskipper, I APOLOGISE. I have now realised that you have to 'be there' to see feel and smell what the conditions are like and I am sure you would not have gone out if you didn't feel it was within your capabilities.

What has taught me this lesson is the jibberish verbal diatribe that has come out of some desk bound look a like commodores drinking their sherry whilst in their silk dressing gowns and slippers safe in their cosy homes.

I have got off my arse and pushed myself to the limit of my capabilities (not the boats) together with some solid friends who as the result of this expedition all been enriched with an experience that should stay with them for a week or so, mine will stay with me forever.

I have had the most wonderful weekends making new friends and really understanding the pure magic of the forum, it is FANTASTIC. For those who want to criticise from their arm chairs, all I would say is that the key is to coumt up the number of forumites you have met and the knowledge you have gained. I always thought raggies were a bunch of odd balls, but I have met magnificent raggies over the weekend and laughed until my sides hurt. Let's wait for the feedback from the weekend and a big thank you to Nigel for organising it, new friendships have been forged and even old wounds mended.

Since you,ve apologised so nicely to my wife, you,ve gone up in my esteem /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well to be honest you couldn't really have gone down /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I did turn back this w/e coz it was too rough in Tremadoc Bay. In fact it was the wierdest sea I have ever witnessed there. Genuinly a confused sea - we were getting a bashing from all sides and no discernable swell pattern. Just waves from all angles. Prob had something to do with the fact the wind had come round from SW to NW - quickly!

Now if it had just been me and Ed_Snelson.....nah just kidding. After last years little episode /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Are you referring to this in your link?

"Sorry, but I don't think praising people for going out in the conditions mentioned is responsible at all, especially such a non essential trip. It may give others including people like me ideas and I could sink with inexperience"

See, I did warn myself and others /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Now go and get out boating and stop being an armchair sailor /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Gale Force 7 going on 8- misunderstood solent

It may be a "closed water" area .... but in GC1's case and may others incl. myself - the wind over tide situation increases worse the closer to Yarmouth you get .....

Simply put it was rough and my "raggie" boat was slamming often getting there on the Thursday to be on-site to meet and organise arrivals / berthing.

Ari - you make me smile with the replies you have to to the best wind-up merchant - GC1 ........ I can hinestly say that the humour of the meeting was added to by some replies on here !!!!

Re: Gale Force 7 going on 8- misunderstood solent

Hi Nigel, sorry I missed you leaving this morning I was unconcious in the cabin after the drinking session which ended up on your boat watching videos on your laptop /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Had a great run back cruising at 38.5 knots, smooth as silk well the airborne bits were /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It was Keith aka racylady who was egging me on to race Chas 25 /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif You know what these raggies are like for speed /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Gale Force 7 going on 8- misunderstood solent

You got 38.5 knots!!!?? Well done guess that means I got over 40!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif forgot to check the GPS /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif was a nice run back and a lot better than the "Gale Force 7 going on 8" on Saturday!!

Managed to stay out of the lime-light so thanks Pete /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif and cheers Nigel for an excellent weekend!!

Re: Gale Force 7 going on 8- misunderstood solent

You are braver than me Chas, if you want me to tell I will /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif As for the speed, yes it's on my plotter in the memory, had to slow down when the anchor started to dangle around, found out the drum hadn't been tightened down enough and the clutch was slipping, that has been tightened now and the anchor secured to the roller /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So when's the race, I will pretty much empty all my tanks before leaving to have a fair chance /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Good fun, your boat looked cool /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

See you soon.

Re: Gale Force 7 going on 8- misunderstood solent

Have you escaped from the forest yet? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif You missed a brilliant weekend /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Gale Force 7 going on 8- misunderstood solent

Glad you got the anchor sorted out, wouldn't want to mess up your nice new gel coat /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I'll be happy to have a little race some time if you want.... might clear the fridge out first though /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You probably tell a better story than me so its up to you!! Did you get any pictures???

Pete,

Great account and well done for posting it.

First time from Hamble Point to Poole in 2001, I did the same thing. A force 5/6, wind over tide and in a 21ft cuddy! Every other wave we punched through and drank in the Solent. Got to say at the end of that trip SWMBO refused to get back on the boat until after 6 large G & T's (it was her first time on the sea)! It was my fault as there were two other larger boats with us and peer pressure came into play. I for one was OK and had sailed in worse. In a powerboat of 21 ft it was the worst I had then had.

The good news is that the nest morning SWMBO woke up and realised if me and the boat could handle that then she had a lot of confidence in us both! We then set off for Alderney and spent the next week hoping the channel and getting cheap booze.

Lesson learnt...don't bow down to Peer Pressure. Lesson also learnt...take swmbo out in the rough, get her scared to death, bring her home alive and now she trusts me implicitly (but a little risky).

Well done from me, you did well in the situation. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
