Gale Force 7 going on 8

For once in my life, I'll come to the defence of GC1. Yes I know, I have had him on ignore for the passed six months.

For once, refreshingly. He slagged no one else off, except himself. Maybe over exagerating the situation just a little, as I have done many times. To write about a trip where nothing went wrong, or anything barely happened at all, is plain boreing.

Yes, maybe the slagging is just pent up anger. I have been fortunate enough, to hear nothing of him for months.

Now lets get it all into perspective. He's in the solent for christ sake. The winds from SW. So blowing off IOW. He's a bit inexperienced, so hardly used to a bit of grean water flying over the top. Ang on. We've had green water over the fly bridge, more times than most have had hot dinners. Been known to have the deck awash, three foot deap. The window screen under water for quite a few minutes. Plenty long enough to warm up radar and GPS anyway. OK maybe a bit more capable boat.

But he was hardly in the Atlantic, was he. No. The Solent boating lake. In a situation where, the further he went to Yarmouth. The calmer the sea.

Yes GC1 can be a pain. I migh just have to switch him off again.

But some of the rest of you, just sound like over excited inexperienced whingers.

Thats brilliant!!!

Now go and read THIS

It was a bit lumpy on Saturday, even for us raggies. But you had experienced crew and you made some good decisions (like sheltering Newtown)

Well done, the new boat looks great. You'll have to move it from where it is...

Whats the problem Jules - he was not smoking a cigarette as well - so it was perfectly save to take the wife and wee one out in that weather!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Too bumpy for me on Sat, and I'm 29ft and 4.5 tonnes, so a bit of a puzzler as to why anyone at half the displacement thort it would be a good day for a maiden voyage.

Today, different kettle, although I'm still upset that the pub at Beaulieu doesn't serve hot food at lunchtime...

dv.

after compiling several responses to your silly post, and binning them all I precis my response :-

I maintain my stance, whic is that the completion of the voyage proves it was do-able, and done with panach.

wot are you saying ?

I'm saying taking a brand new untried single engined boat with a young child and (clearly very frightened) wife on board in a gale force nine is bloody stupid.

Doing it after publicly deriding a very experienced professional skipper for doing just that however is frankly unbelievable!

Those of us at Yarmouth today had a real laugh at some of your posts! The "frightened" SWMBO was in fine form and has not been put off boating in the least. The lovely thing about GC1 is that he really does know how to wind you lot up. The Blackberry really came into it's own this afternoon while we were all BBQ'ing in bright sunshine watching India Juliet perform her aerial display over the Yarmouth lifeboat.

Thanks to everybody who kindly "donate" the odd glass and burger in my direction. It was a great afternoon /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No trouble at all going below and looking after Mrs GC1. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif, and little miss GC1.

By god it was rough though, I know there are plenty who have experienced worse, but the wind was blowing straight down the Solent, and it actually seemed to get worse the further west we went. I think it was the first time I've ever been scared on a boat.

Ang on. Where did we get to a F9. It was maybe six possibly seven last I knew. Sheltered waters. Fetch ?? five miles?? Bit of a boring mill pond when I've been there. Can it actually get rough?? Yes theres an uncomfortable chop in the Solent. Might even be higher than the boat. But it's only a case of slowing down a bit init. It's not as though your out in it for any length of time. Get a grip, it's only a few minutes. It's hardly like you've been anywhere at all. More like shunting round marina options really.

I've had more forum meet ups than I can remember. London, Majorca. Weymouth. To name just a few. If folks cant get off there arse to get there. It's hardly worth bothering. Is it??

So these days. If I can get away. I'll meet up with folks in Weymouth or Alderney. But bu**ered if I will do a hundred miles for them to do two!!

Yep , great afternoon, especially after yesterday's adventures.

Having gone to Yarmouth with GC1 yesterday, I needed to get back to Mercury on the Hamble today, Sunday. Got the offer of a lift to Poole and car ride to Mercury, a long way round though.

The only other vessel on route to the Hamble was Magnum Force. So scrounged a lift off of Magnum. Wow, what a ride! Did end of Yarmouth pier to Calshot in 15 minutes. That 275 Merc is so quiet and smooth.

Magnum offers Solitaire 'a go' off Calshot. Wow again! Dave threw that Cougar around, the 'g' force!!!. Then he spots Red Jet 3 coming in. Throws the thing at the wash at lots on knots (no idea how many), Mrs Magnum and I look at one another, thinking, 'Oh Mah Gawd' getting ready for a massive jolt. Dave eases off the throttle, then launches the machine at the wash and we glide over it as if it wasn't there. Yes, that Solitaire can handle a powerful machine.

Anyway, thanks Magnum, for the lift and ride of my life.

If this goes on much longer it will be F10!

Bramblemet gave the strongest gust yesterday as 32knots at about 3.15 and it was generally gusting less than 30knots, so it was a steady 5/6 with gusts to 7. I was in Cowes yesterday afternoon and there was a nasty "Solent chop" because of the spring tides which probably made it seem worse.

Why whats the point?

I can't believe this load of south coast wooses can make such a fuss about a few small waves. Try the Irish sea were real men sail!

I think you should be aware of the serious conditons we solent types have to face.
