Re: GAFIRS at Stokes Bay - photos

Just thought I would add a couple of photos taken when I visited their boathouse in October. This first photo is of their smaller RHIB about to be launched to go out on a shout - she is equpped with an inboard diesel and a waterjet propulsion unit. :

While here is the boathouse - the smaller RHIB lives in the garage on the right. The bow sticking out on the left is their new big offshore RHIB (equipped with 2 x 300 hp diesels and water-jets) who is crying out for funds to help finish her outfitting.

Maybe what I haven't got much of a grasp of, is how busy the Solent is?

[/ QUOTE ]

Back in 2001, the count for the number of permanent berths for the Solent area was 23,159........ which might give you an idea what it can be like. Source

Even if 20,000 boats never go anywhere, it still leaves plenty of others to get into trouble!

Scandinavia

I could but Finland is one of the Nordic countries and not Scandinavia, it is Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. That's where the troll boys live ! And we go to bed two hours earlier than you, that's why I come back only today. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Scandinavia

But once when Finland was part of Sweden, did it have trolls then?

PS: This is an example troll. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Scandinavia

Sure, but after that the trolls had 170 years time to learn to speak russian /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hmmmm, makes a mental note..........leave the Solent well abeam Smiffy!

I know some will think I'm anti social, and they might be right, but I go sailing to get away from people, and all the hurley burley that goes with them. So ok, why is it so popular? is it a historical thing? as far as I can tell it aint all that picturesque, it's busy with commercial traffic, it has more than it's fair share of hazards, so why so popular? is it the large number of deep water berths? South Devon and Cornwall are far more picturesque, have plenty of deep water berths / anchorages. Yes both places are popular, and getting more crowded, but nothing like the Solent, so what is it?

Different people have different preferences I guess. I also sail to get away from stress and people and if I find an empty anchorage I am most happy. Thing is you need a slow boat as well, because you cannot arrive first. What are you to do if others come in later? Move again? Better come late yourself and see if it's empty still, much less risk others will arrive after you... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Nothing against people though, sometimes it is nice to meet and talk to other boaters. But not always.

I likes that! now that's my kind of place! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif......Where is it? No worries for me about having a slow boat, I got one! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif She suits me though, at least for the moment. She always gets me where I want to go, and she don't get her knickers in a twist over a bit of weather.

Re: Scandinavia

Do the trolls know ?
tree hundra, kolme sataa, tres cientos..... depends on which language they speak ? What are you going to do with 3oo mails ? Celebrate with surströmming ?

It's Kallskär. 59deg 29.792 N, 19deg 09.857 E.

Don't think Helinä will get in there though, the entrance is quite narrow. :-)

Oh, and as for the celebration, maybe lunch will have to do...

I am a beginner , perhaps folk that malign the Sloent are seeing her through Jaded eyes, having 'been there and done that' - well I haven't, my eyes are open to new experiences and possibilities - I hasten to add that I do not wear rose coloured spectacles either!

I chose the solent because as a beginner it is a good place to spend a season or two - to cut my teeth on with my little boat I have just bought and there some pretty places to be found.
Agreed, I dont like the M25 Aspect either - I am fortunate in the fact I will sail during the week when there is less traffic and I would rather be able to go out for a sail (weather allowing) for a couple of hours 2-3 times a week (as well over nighters and extended trips to France) other than using her once a fortnight after a 2 hour commute - sailing can not just be about the destination- can it?

Agreed, it is a shame if folk do not, at some time, venture out of the Solent - especially when there is so much to explore and esp. looking at the beautiful piccies that have just been posted.
Why be judge and jurer? It is their choice, each and everyone to their own I say!

No not at all, it's one of the reasons I keep me boat where I live, but an awful lot of folk can't do that, they don't all live by the seaside like us. Thank God! 'Tis bad enough when they comes a visitin' in the summer! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
