gaff rig problem

I'm a beginner and I bought a macwester Kelpie. This boat is fitted with a gaff rig. I got the sails up and I sailed. But I think I need to have ropes to pull up the end of the boom and ropes to pull down the end of the boom to flatten the mainsail.
I'd like to have a drawing so I can see how the ropes should be connected. (excuse me for not knowing all the proper english boating term )

Kindest regards,

Dick, I think you're posting a much larger question than you're aware of. Rather than trying to find an answer here, I think you should first try to get hold of "The Gaff Rig Handbook" by John Leather (ISBN 0 9524679 0 9) and see if that doesn't tell you what you need to know.

In the unlikely event that you're still in doubt after reading it, then post the question again.

In addition to the previous posting, you might try reading the book "hand, reef and steer" by Tom Cunliffe. This one and the John Leather book are the two best books for the gaff sailer.

Also, go looking for other gaffers: look at the rig and talk to the owners.

Iv just brought a macwester Kelpie and when looking for info on the boat I came across youre post.
If you could help with any info I would be most grateful (sailing characterristics ect)
Thanks
Pete
