Yes we do that too, but this thread has been very illuminating (in a good way). In our case as we have elec winches, and it's proven impossible under ANY conditions to furl the jib manually, the effort required under any circumstances is minimal but the risk of damage due to clumsy / inept / badly timed operation is magnified. Will do some more trials next time we're out.

I've not done it, but if I had to furl going up wind to a strong wind, I might try motoring through the wind to back the sail then ease the sheet and wind in on the furling winch.

Backed sail, not tried that. SHould get a tight furl....?

I think what LadyInBed means is to reduce the pressure on the jib when sailing upwind in strong winds in order to facilitate the furling of the jib.
