Many people come on here and ask wether a fuel tank should be left near empty or full over the winter layup.

The census of opinion is=

Petrol tanks to be near empty.
Diesel tanks to be full.

CORRECT???

Now i have a petrol boat, and it currently has 1/2 tank of fuel in it(approx 120lts), So my plan this weekend is to try and use as much of it up as i can. To leave it near empty...

That was, Until somebody said to me yesterday NO NO NO, you don't want to be doing that!!! You want to leave the petrol tank FULL, to cut down condensation, But what about the petrol going off me says? Keep the tank full and put a fuel stableizer in with it...and you wont have any problems, they say!!!!

So a question from a confused boat owner,,,, Which is best for PETROL tanks?

Cheers in advanced.

Alistair..

IMHO petrol tanks should never be left empty as the vapour can build up into an explosive mixture. This can be dangerous as on a warm day your tanks can start venting explosive gas. Certainly I know that aircraft were always refuelled on landing for that reason, to keep the air in them to the minimum.

Diesel is not such a problem but in with both fuels leaving the tanks part filled can cause condensation and problems. If the boat is left for any lengthy period fill the tanks first.
