Does anyone have any idea about how much diesel is returned from the engine to the tanks. I have VP tamd60b's.

The reason for the question is my heater and genny run off a third tank that is filled from the fuel return from the stbd engine.

cheers

Sounds an odd way of going about things. You must have to run heater/geny just the right amount else empty tank or overflowing!!

Not that stupid, it means that the fuel in the third tank is not stale. sort of creative or insipired Id call it.

OK when cruising, we live aboard and the tank empties in about 2 weeks use of the heater, hence the question about how much fuel is returned and therefore how long the engines will have to run to put enough fuel back in the tank. I know running the engines under no load isnt good for them, but if a significant amount of fuel is reutrned I wont have to run them for long.

Presume the third tank is higher than the others? Can you fit a transfer pump into the main fuel line without too much hacking about.Sort of Tee with a valve on it?

Not an expert, but I know a lot of fuel is returned to the tank when the engine is running.

Thinking about it I quite like the idea of your third tank - it means all the fuel for your genny and heating has already been through the water seperator and fuel filters on the engine supply, so the filters on the heater and genny will not get clogged as quickly.
