Excuse my ignorance but what is fuel polishing? I struggle polishing the hull is there something else I should be doing?

It's where you refilter all your diesel to remove nasties, typically I understand by running it through finer filters than normal. ASAP offer a kit where you add an electric pump, a filter and a sort of by-pass loop of pipes and you cycle your fuel through it - drawing it from one end of the tank and putting it back the other end - nice and clean.

Couldn't you just drain it into the bilges, pump it out and re-fuel?

No worries, Roger. Flushing the bilges numerous times with fresh sea-water usually works.
