I just fitted a Fuel gauge and sender unit.

It required two wires / connections. Positive to sender centre connection (from gauge) which is the float part and rheostat. Negative lead connected to surrounding mount plate of the sender to provide continuity.

Other end had 12v +ve from battery to gauge which then fed sender. Negative was back to battery. Basically whole thing works by varying the volts by movement of the float up / down - the gauge being really a voltmeter with a tank reading face.

But basically I would check all with a multi-meter first Etc.
